The Benefits of Both Following and Breaking Feminine Stereotypes in Hamilton

Abstract

The musical Hamilton sets up its main female characters as intelligent and strong women, but soon, they lapse into stereotypical feminine roles. However, Eliza Hamilton retains her power and wisdom within her role as wife and mother. The audience comes away from the musical not admiring Hamilton, but instead wanting to leave a legacy like Eliza. But ultimately, one well-written female character does not make Hamilton a feminist musical.
